23 January
I was sitting on my terrace drinking tea and
typing when a grey squirrel appeared. I
fed it with small chunks of a long Italian biscuit, the only thing I had to
offer.
It seemed very content, retreated a little, ate each piece and came
back for another. Another biscuit loving
squirrel arrived and I was delighted by
how tame they were. The squirrels in
Greenwich Park in London are similarly used to people and will come very close
to feed. However, one biscuit has
limitations and it’s difficult explaining to a squirrel that there is no longer
anything doing, so it became fairly insistent in its demands for more food.
After
spending 20 minutes trying to attract it, I was now shooing it away –
especially when it climbed on the table
and strode towards me on very sharp looking little claws. I have very ambivalent feelings to over-familiar squirrels.
