Monday
was my last day in South Africa and Marjory and I went poking round Franschhoek
(French Corner) which was pretty but full of superior souvenir shops and
souvenir stalls. “I give you good
price,” said one man, “Don’t buy from those people next door. They are Scallywags.” Neither he nor the people next door had what
we were looking for, anyway, so we couldn’t test either his prices or their
morals.

We
were just visiting the Tourist Information place to ask about lunch when a
helpful man with a mild northern accent insisted that Dieu Donné was the best
place around for miles. So we went to
Dieu Donné and he was right. For one
last goodbye lunch, it was absolutely lovely.
Marj ate fish and I had a little selection of mezes and tapas. I also ordered a chocolate mousse which was
actually a chocolate mousse inside an easter egg shell and was one of the
richest things I’ve had in years.

I am aware that a lot of this blog is currently about eating out. But as Marjory and I were hither and thither these last few days and nowhere near a pan or a kitchen, what are women to do?
A very
nice British woman called Mary, from Toronto, came to chat to us and then the helpful man with the mild
northern accent came over and we now know that he owns a carpet shop just round
the corner from my house in Scarborough.
I
ought to say that it’s a small world but, as Marjory was then taking me to the
airport and as it took me all night to fly to Doha and then some, it didn’t seem it.
